Since Barbie transformed the global toy fashion doll market in 1959, she has undergone a number of transformations. Both Barbie and Ken, her boyfriend (or best male friend, depending on who you ask!) have certainly moved with the times…

Neil Moodie has headed up hair team to art direct a fascinating photoshoot to recreate some of Barbie and Ken’s best looks from the past 6 decades. Neil has tended to the locks of some of fashion and film’s biggest stars. These include Gemma Chan, Jodie Comer, Phoebe Dynevor, Erin O’Connor, Naomi Campbell and Cara Delevingne. This summer, however, he’s been focussing his attention on another A-lister. Yo’ve guessed it – Barbie!

Neil and the team at his London salon, the Neil Moodie Studio, have delved through the archives and created looks inspired by some of Barbie’s most iconic hairstyles since she was launched in 1959. Boyfriend Ken has also been a source of inspiration for the fun pictures in the recent shoot, which includes 70’s Crimped Hair Rainbow Barbie, 2002’s Radiant Red Head Barbie (originally created by Bob Mackie), the 2010 So In Style Barbie, the 1980 first black Barbie and the 60s Mod Barbie. The looks also include a re-imagination of 1992’s Totally Hair Barbie, which had hair down to the toes. It became the highest-selling Barbie doll of all time selling more than 10 million worldwide.

“Barbie has been such a big part of our culture for 64 years,” says Neil. “She has transformed and evolved throughout the last eight decades. Therefore, the inspirations are broad and diverse. The research was so interesting. You can see from the various versions of Barbie what may have been going on in society. I didn’t want the team to copy like-for-like the original styles, but re-imagine and update them to be contemporary, wearable and fun.”
