Experimentation: pushing the limits with Michael Haase

Experimentation is irresistible to Michael Haase, who is no stranger to Estetica. Haase is a hyphenated educator-stylist-salon owner at his own Salon Platinum Black in Los Angeles. Here we gain some insight into his incredible work.

Michael Haase’s work has often graced the pages of Estetica USA. Whether he is dabbling in avant-garde experimentation or focusing on a client behind the chair, every photo and collection reflects insight and inspiration. It takes very little for something to get the synapses in his brain sparking. And the result is almost always a new editorial collection born of experimentation with color, materials, shapes, and light.

No matter where I go, I find inspiration in something, and sometimes they might be weird,” reveals Michael. “On a recent road trip, we were stalled in traffic on an out of the way road that was being painted with center lines. I noticed the paint was not ordinary. It had an “embossing” texture to it once they placed it on the highway.” Then came his Eureka moment. “It came to me: why not do this to hair! And so it went.

Moving into my garage aka, “the cave”, and the experimentation began. “The shapes I created reminded me of a tribal ceremony for the spirits that saved the land from an Amazonian tribe. I do love bringing strange to my work,” he commented.

Indeed, these shapes seem to mimic their ornamentation, resembling the god like headgear of the tribal ceremony.
