There are many things that are said about hair: that cutting it frequently makes it grow faster, that it is best to wash it every day, that the mask and conditioner can make it go greasy… Alberto Sanguino, director of education at Llongueras tells us which are true and which are quite simply not!
1. CUTTING YOUR HAIR MORE FREQUENTLY MAKES IT GROW FASTER – FALSE
There are five factors that determine hair growth: the genetic factor, health, diet, stress and hair hygiene. So cutting your hair more or less frequently will not make it grow faster, but it does ensure that the hair is healthier and that there are no split or damaged ends.
2. IT IS BEST TO WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY – FALSE
The frequency of washing depends on the level of natural oil generated by the scalp. If you have an oily scalp, your hair should be washed more often, but without overdoing it, since the more you wash, the scalp will begin to generate oil faster and faster. But if the scalp is dry, the ideal is to wash it every two or three days, and do two soaps, since this way the dirt will be less noticeable.
3. COLOUR SHOULD BE APPLIED TO UNWASHED HAIR – TRUE
Ideally, the hair should have been washed the day before, in this way, the scalp is protected by its natural fat and possible itching or redness is avoided.
4. CONTINUED USE OF STYLING PRODUCTS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO HAIR – FALSE
Styling products do not damage the hair, but it is super important to use them correctly and especially to use those that are the most appropriate for each type of hair.
5. A FINAL RINSE OFF IN COLD WATER IS BENEFICIAL – TRUE
Cold water helps seal the cuticle, allowing the light to reflect more on the hair and increase its shine. The temperature contrast favours the blood circulation of the scalp, which helps the good activity of the scalp, thus preventing hair loss. The last rinse with cold water is very good for oily hair as it helps the oil take longer to be generated.
6. WHEN YOU PULL OUT ONE GREY HAIR, MORE WILL GROW – FALSE
One hair grows out of one hair follicle and each follicle has nothing to do with each other, so pulling out a grey hair will not cause more grey hair, since each one comes from a different follicle.
7. A MASK AND CONDITIONER WILL MAKE THE HAIR GREASY – FALSE
The key to these products is to apply them correctly according to the type of hair. On dry hair, avoid the root zone, on normal hair, apply medium to ends; and on oily hair it is necessary to apply only at the ends.
8. YOU SHOULDN’T WEAR YOUR HAIR TIED UP FOR TOO LONG – TRUE
The rubber band or scrunchy presses and twists the hair, causing it damage and breakage. The tension of the ponytail, bun or braid damages the hair follicle, weakening it and causing hair loss. In addition, always wearing your hair tied at the same height also considerably weakens your hair. Avoid using rubber bands with metal joining, try to be spiral or fabric.
9. CUTTING YOUR HAIR DURING A FULL MOON MAKES IT GROW FASTER – FALSE
This is an issue that has not been scientifically proven. Physically, the moon affects the tides and the oceans due to the gravity of two large masses. But a person is an insignificant body to notice the gravity of the moon. Now, there are many cultures that worship the moon and consider that if the moon is in the first quarter this will make hair grow faster.
10. YOU SHOULDN’T KEEP WET HAIR WRAPPED IN A TOWEL FOR A LONG TIME – TRUE
Moisture weakens the hair fibre. If the hair is dried wrapped in the towel, it will become tangled, so it will take much more time to detangle it and the hair will tend to break. Ideally, it is to remove the moisture slightly with the towel, untangle it and let it air dry with the towel on the shoulders so as not to get wet.
