International Education in a world that continues to grow smaller makes sense. And Life in the Circus is a new “exchange program” being proposed by Michael Haase (USA) and Hans Beers (NL)
“Join the Navy and see the world” was once a popular recruitment slogan. Today it might suffice to be a hairdresser! Indeed, international education is easier than ever in this world of social and digital media has brought the world of hairdressing closer and closer. And Life in the Circus, the exciting new collaboration between a prominent USA hairdresser and two from the Netherlands, now makes it easier for hairdressers in the “Old World” to learn innovative skills and find inspiration.
Now Michael Haase, Hans Beers and J’roen Gelderblom will be welcoming artists interested in Life in the Circus, where they can find the education they crave. As the lessons are live, there will be more stimulation than what they can find on the small screen. Sunday and Monday, 12 of 13 November will take place at J’roen Gelderblom’s SET.ONkappers salon. There doesn’t exist a better venue for a cool crowd! The focus will include creative cutting on female models and color and barbering beautiful men. All on a nice sunny weekend in Amsterdam.NL!

Michael Haase, hairdresser and owner of Platinum Black Salon in Los Angeles had long admired the work of a certain Hans Beers. Haase gleaned that Beers was a master of cutting disciplines that reflected the techniques of the iconic Vidal Sassoon. What Haase didn’t know was just how much Beers also admired his work. The two would occasionally comment on each others’ posts.
Then in late 2019 they finally connected and Beers invited Haase to join him in teaching classes together in the Netherlands. The plan was to organize a tour, working in company studios for our look-and-learn and hands-on classes. Then after 2 days we would go on tour to different salons. The start date was to be March 2020 – but then Covid interrupted their plans.
However, neither lost heart. “We had already discussed cutting ideas and scheduled model calls. Hans takes great pride in his style of cutting since it has a linear feeling to it; I admire the commitment. My Sassoon-based work with a bit of organic attitude for the commercial client keeps my passion extremely healthy since the time given to each piece is so thought out. Clearly, we are of an age where both of us have enough history in mastery we could teach for years to come and you still wouldn’t get everything out of us,” said Michael.
For the duration of pandemic closures, Michael buried himself in his garage cave and kept creating pieces for photo shoots and editorial space. Hans still worked on ideas for his now new website and salon space. But both were determined to eventually pick up where they had left off.
More recently, Haase and Beers invited J’roen Gelderblom to join the team. J’roen gets his high with hair from the street vibes, music and the motorcycle scene in Amsterdam. He was very excited about working together and his SETON Kappers Salon is the perfect space.
