With autumn just around the corner many of us are thinking about what the next big hair trends are going to be as we come into the new season. Tie dye hair is one to still look out for.
“Tie dye and contrasting hair colour trends where clients would look to get two or more clashing hair colours within their hair were a big trend in the summer season and although bright, bold and adventurous, we will see these colourful hair colour trends continuing to be popular for the new season but darker and more subtle in tone,” says Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International.
“Instead of hues that remind of us of sunshine, sunsets and summer cocktails such as yellows, oranges, pinks and lime greens, we will see clients requesting darker, moodier tones that play homage to the change in the weather including navy blues, forest greens, dark purples and plum tones and burgundy and maroon. The beauty of these tones is that they give the hair a high shine and therefore to keep the colour looking its best and to ensure the hair retains its moisture and shine for a luxe finish, clients should use the best quality hair care at home.”
Here are Suzie McGill‘s top tips for stylists looking to try out the tie dye hair colour technique:
- Use a sponge to apply the colour instead of a brush.
- Start where you want the colour to be the most pigmented and then the excess of your sponge to blend out the colour to create a tie dye effect.
- Don’t be too heavy handed with your colour application, gradually move the sponge around the hair and don’t blot as this will result in the hair having a blotchy appearance.
- If you don’t want the finish to be as prominent, add some conditioner into the hair colour and go back into the hair with this more subtle shade of your original colour. This will give the hair a more seamless blend where you can transition the colours into one another. On the other hand, if your client does want to go bold, add in another colour for an even more adventurous hair colour look.
- Be mindful that the sponge technique works best for those with shorter hair or if you are concentrating on the top of the clients head only. For those with longer hair, the technique may differ slightly and you may want to use a brush to focus on the mid lengths and ends.
“With these quirkier hair colour trends I always like to team them with a shorter cut like a pixie cut for added edge and cool girl vibes. However, I’ve also loved recently experimenting with this trend in longer styles like the mullet and the wolf cut. It’s definitely an adventurous hair colour trend that will catch people’s attention,” concludes Suzie.
