When Amy Burgess joined the Tiger Club training scheme at Q Hair and Beauty in Chichester in her early teens, little did she imagine this would lead to her managing one of the multi award-winning salon’s branches.

Amy is now managing a team at the Q Hair and Beauty salon in Midhurst. She is so happy that she decided as a youngster that hairdressing was the career for her. Amy was just 14 when she became a member of Tiger Club, Q’s pioneering after-school initiative designed to give budding hairdressers a sound grounding in the basics and help them decide if working in the hairdressing industry was what they really wanted to do.
Recognition of Amy’s talents and commitment was there from the start with her openness to education and learning. In addition to weekly club sessions she also worked at the salon on Saturdays and in the school holidays.
She started her apprenticeship at Q when she was 16 and during her Level 2, which she completed at the age of 17, she won a national Apprentice of the Year award.
“When I started my Level 3, I was successful in getting onto the Fellowship Artistic Team 2017,” explains Amy. “It was a year’s worth of amazing education. I was able to network and enjoyed opportunities like working backstage at London Fashion Week. One of my highlights was presenting at Salon International with full professional set up. I was also part of a shoot with our team for Rolex, creating classic, elegant updos, for a local publication.”
After qualifying in her Level 2, Amy became a graduate stylist at Q . SHe then moved up to stylist, designer, senior designer and now director. “I have also been a part of training the next generation of hairdressers with the Tiger Club, which I loved doing,” she adds. “I took a sabbatical in 2019 for eight months to travel around Asia, an incredible experience, and since returning in October 2020 I have been full-time at the Q Midhurst salon, growing my column and skills. We went through lockdowns and during that time I created a few ‘how to’ videos while we navigated that period.” Then, in August 2021, Amy became acting manager at Midhurst. Inn June this year she was appointed manager.
